While in isolation in a small hotel room in New Zealand in 2021, I create a series of drawings that are an immediate response to our situation. This opens up a new line of exploration…

In 2021 we were placed in strict hotel isolation for 14 days before we were allowed to enter New Zealand. No longer on Canadian soil, and not yet released into New Zealand we felt a strange sense of not belonging anywhere- existing in a hotel room, our meals left at our door in brown paper bags, exercising under guard for no more than 20 minutes a day in a parking lot, and the constant testing through nose-swabs…
Drawing became my meditation and daily activity. It is a simple and quiet collection: a searching-for form that both appears and disappears as mark-making becomes a form of filling time. The drawings are a daily activity that helps me pass the time and helps make sense of where I am, and what I am experiencing.

I pack small pieces of Stonehenge paper, gouache paint, and graphite without knowing how I am going to use them. I have very little with me and this creates a new freedom, an exploration without complication.
I notice that the graphite reacts differently to the gouache paint than on the plain paper: the materials lead the way for a new exploration of sculptural shapes.
